Ducks seem to have a “comfort zone” in which they usually operate in during non-migratory flight. More than likely, it’s just where they feel safest from predators. Now full disclosure, this breakdown is taken from The LeMaster Method. It is probably the best little pocket guide book you can buy when it comes to learning the best ways to identify ducks. The list in which the ducks are ordered was taken from his manual, with surrounding commentary from yours truly.

Imagine you see a group of 8 or 12 mallards Wayyyyyy up high. Like it’s so high you don’t even call, they aren’t looking at your spread, no matter what do.  I can’t honestly say what that height is, I’m horrible at judging distance (and most of us are worse than we think, we often say we shot a duck at 60 yards and it’s closer to 40. Another blog for another day), so I know as soon as I say its 500 feet you all will let the emails and comments fly, saying it’s 800 feet, or 300 yards, or whatever. So instead of me wrongfully assuming what that distance is, just picture that height in your mind.  Okay, so that would be the TOP of the highest zone.

These “zones” are broken down into 4 groups. So take that height of the mallard group, and evenly divide that distance into 4 equal distances. Is this making sense? Let’s hope so. Here is the breakdown according to the LeMaster Method:

Zone 4 – The Highest Group

    Mallard
    Black Duck
    Gadwall
    Wigeon
    Pintail

Zone 3

    Northern Shoveler
    Cinnamon Teal
    Blue Wing Teal
    Green Wing Teal
    Wood Duck

Zone 2

    Common Goldeneye
    Lesser Scaup
    Greater Scaup
    Ring-Necked
    Canvasback
    Redhead

Zone 1

    Old Squaw
    Bufflehead
    Coot
    Common Merganser
    Hooded Merganser
    Red-Breasted Merganser
    Common Eider
    Ruddy
    Black Scoter (“scooter”)
    Surf Scoter
    White-Winged Scooter

It seems appropriate that dabblers fly higher, while divers are closer to the water. This is not an exact law, but if you visualize these 4 zones next time you are in the blind, you will see this is more true than not. There is variance from this list, this zone was broken down according to the males. Believe it or not, there is a little difference in order of height per zone for the females.

Did any of these ducks surprise you with where they fell on the list? Let us know! Leave your comments below about this ranking of flying height.

See you in the Blind!
